[...] I’ve been getting into Jennifer Jones’ (of Podtech) Marketing Voices podcast. Recently she interviewed the legend himself: Guy Kawasaki. I first read about Guy as a late-teens Apple-obsessed design student. He essentially was the first corporate evangelist. In fact, on my very first resumes out of school, I would use the word “evangelism” when describing my sweet gig as an Apple Campus Representative at UMass Dartmouth. That always generated a couple questions, since folks had not yet associated the word “evangelism” with technology. Apparently, those folks were not Mac users. [...]

Great stuff Jennifer! I'm a big fan of Guy and his work so I was pleased to find you had an interview with him podcasted.

One question: how do you gain access to your interview subjects? Most of these people are supposedly mega busy, and they can't make time for every person who wants to interview them so please share some of your methodologies.

[...] Some anecdotal research overheard from Guy Kawasaki on Marketing Voices, a podcast hosted by Jennifer Jones, is very revealing. Kawasaki asked a panel of five teenagers about their media consumption habits and learned: They don’t like direct advertising because they know they’re targeted for everything by everybody; They watch 1-2 hours of TV a week and that’s TiVo’ed; They rarely click on banner ads, as they’ve learned to tune them out; They tend to be more influenced by product placement than by an ad; They send 1400 text messages a month! (An interesting side note to consider: teens seek out trendy items to buy in printed materials like glossy teen magazines, but will then purchase these products online.) [...]

hi..To answer small business consultant's question on how i get to interview the people i do...I have been working in Silicon Valley since the 1980s while a General Manager of Regis McKenna Inc, a marketing relations firm which has now shrunk to almost nothing sad to say. RMI's clients were the best in the Valley and I was head of the Palo Alto office for about 4 years and worked at RMI for 7 years. Apple, INtel, Sun were all clients. Specifically concerning Guy, i got the chance to work with him at Apple then i was later on his board of advisors at Garage. Then i moved into being a marketing partner for Mayfield, one of the leading VC firms in SVALLEY so i have gotten to know a lot of technology and health care industry leaders over the years here. I also had a TV show in 1988 called High Tech Visions in which I interviewed many executives including John Doerr, Scott McNealy etc. Now at PodTech, our clients are some of the same people: INTEL, SUN, Juniper Networks so my access to people who are in the know about technology and marketing continues. So i just have always had great positions where I can get to know great people. Also living in the Valley for so long and having kids in the Valley who go to school with these people's kids also helps.

[...] So, Brian’s latest interview is with Guy Kawasaki of Garage. I touched on my long fascination with Guy before when Jennifer Jones interviewed him. One thing that I like about Brian’s chats is that he often is doing his interview subjects as much of favor as they are doing him by granting the interview. A lot has to be said for a good brainstorming session with a fresh set of eyes and ears. I’ve taken part in a few of these lately and I love the feeling of being helpful and being helped.
